Get to know your federal election candidates

The 45th federal general election is fast approaching on Monday, April 28. Do you know who your candidates are?

As of Monday, April 7, four candidates are in the running in the Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman riding: incumbent James Bezan for the Conservative Party of Canada, Byron Gryba for the People’s Party of Canada, Wayne James of the Green Party of Canada, Rhonda Nickel for the Liberal Party of Canada and Chris Riddell for the United Party of Canada. In the Winnipeg West riding, which now includes the RM of Rosser, three candidates are in the running: Dennis Bayomi for the Green Party of Canada, Doug Eyolfson for the Liberal Party of Canada and incumbent Marty Morantz for the Conservative Party of Canada. 

For all ridings, the complete confirmed candidate list will be available on Wednesday, April 9 on www.elections.ca.

To help voters learn more about your candidates and their views, the Stonewall and District Chamber of Commerce will host an elections forum for the Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman riding on Tuesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. in the Stonewall legion clubroom. 

The Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce will host an all-candidates debate for the West Winnipeg riding on Monday, April 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Holiday Inn Winnipeg Airport West (2520 Portage Ave.). It’s free to attend, but registration is required due to limited seating. The event will also be streamed on Facebook Live (@AssiniboiaChamberMB). A couple more candidates also throw their hat in the ring. 

In the Winnipeg West riding, Levi Anger of the People’s Party of Canada is included on the list of candidates for the Assiniboia Chamber debate, but his name was not yet on the confirmed candidates list on the Elections Canada website at press time. 

Advance voting days will take place from April 18 to 21, followed by the election day on Monday, April 28. Registered voters should receive their voter information card in the mail by April 11. Learn more at www.elections.ca or call 1-800-463-6868.
