A new restaurant is open at the Winnipeg Stock Yards and serving up all kinds of homemade goodness.
Metis Mama is officially open for business in the Winnipeg Stock Yards offering burgers, fries, chicken fingers, grilled cheese, poutines, and more. Owner Jody Delorme started the business after offering takeout food from her home in St. Laurent.
“I’ve always loved cooking and feeding people,” she said.
A few years ago, Delorme started making and selling homemade frozen pizzas. Then she added pierogies, cabbage rolls, and homemade pizza pops. Before long, Delorme was selling proper takeout food this way, and the reviews she was getting were all five stars.
Through word of mouth, Delorme found out the Winnipeg Stock Yards were looking for someone to reopen the restaurant/cafeteria, and upon applying, she was offered the spot. On Aug. 7, Metis Mama officially opened for business. The restaurant is open for dine-in and takeout Tuesday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Once Delorme knows more about her customers, she’ll adjust her hours accordingly.
On Metis Mama’s menu is a Fatboy burger she makes herself, and it was a fan favourite when she offered takeout in St. Laurent. She also has chilli fries and taco fries, which are her biggest hit. Delorme is also known for her homemade buffalo chicken burger, and once she gets into the swing of things, she’ll add that to the Metis Mama menu as well.
Delorme is a self-taught cook, learning everything she knows from her elders and trial and error. Opening her own restaurant has always been her dream, and she’s officially achieved that now.
“I really love feeding people and getting that positive feedback from them,” she said. “It makes me happy; it makes me proud, and it’s just something that I enjoy.”
Comments on Facebook have been nothing but positive for the new restaurant so far, with many people still just learning about it and making plans to go. To find Metis Mama, go to the Winnipeg Stock Yards just off Highway 236, and head inside the front doors. Once inside, multiple signs will lead you up the stairs and to Delorme’s restaurant, with enough seating for up to 40 people.
