Stonewall council news in brief

Mark your calendars for several changes to Stonewall’s upcoming council and committee meetings. 

The Jan. 15 regular council meeting is rescheduled to Jan. 22, and the April 16 regular council meeting is rescheduled to April 23. 

In addition, the Oct. 1 regular council meeting is rescheduled to Oct. 8, while the Oct. 8 committee of the whole meeting is rescheduled to Oct. 15. As a result, the Oct. 15 regular council meeting is rescheduled to Oct. 22.

In other council news:

• Council accepted a proposal from FT3 Development to assist with further planning and development for the age-in-place campus.

• The CAO executed a proposal between the Town of Stonewall and WSP Canada Inc. for engineering services to upgrade Limestone Bay. 

• The Town of Stonewall will provide a job description for the position of community and recreation services co-ordinator and a permanent position of economic and tourism development officer. The town is also hiring a full-time chief financial officer.

• The town is engaging in a service agreement with the Commissionaires to provide bylaw enforcement from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The Commissionaires’ bylaw enforcement staff will be designated as officers for the Town of Stonewall. 

• Council gave first reading to a bylaw to establish special service levies on all residential and institutional property within town limits for waste and recyclable curbside collection, removal and disposal service for 2025. In addition, council gave first reading to a bylaw to establish a rate for urban services provided to the Town of Stonewall, excluding the annexed lands. 

• Council gave second and third readings of a bylaw to regulate the code of conduct for council members, as required by the Municipal Act.

• Council also gave second and third readings of a bylaw to regulate smoking and vaping on or near Town of Stonewall outdoor facilities and properties, including the distance from the entrance to indoor facilities. Smoking and vaping is not allowed on the grounds of a town building with the exception of specific areas that are not within 7.5 metres of a door or entrance. Smoking and vaping are also not allowed at playgrounds in town or outdoor facilities owned by the town. Anyone who violates the bylaw (which is posted on the town’s website at www.stonewall.ca) can face a fine of up to $250 for each offence.

• The Town of Stonewall will host an open house focused on the recreation redevelopment plan for the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex. The come-and-go event will take place on Monday, Feb. 4 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the second floor arena foyer of VMSC.
