Thunder Report: Crunchers home opener ends in nailbiter

Date:

Crunchers Thunder

The youngest Thunder team got their first taste of Manitoba Minor Football Association action on Sunday.

The Crunchers, ages eight and nine, took on the St. Vital Mustangs at Stonewall Collegiate Field and came up one touchdown short in their first game of the season.

After trading touchdowns in the first half, the Thunder entered the second half tied at 12. After another major from each side, it was the Mustangs in the final minutes of the game that were able to make a quick march down the field to score the game winning touchdown and defeat the Thunder 24-18.

Though they didn’t get the victory, head coach Kyle Kauk was still impressed with how his team played in what was the first-ever football game for a majority of the squad.

“Our team played great,” said Kauk on Monday. “With only three returning players, a majority of our team is brand new to the game of football. Our quarterback went four for six, our defence made an interception, forced two fumbles and had three quarterback sacks.”

The Thunder will be back in action this weekend for their first road game which comes against the East Side Eagles.

Kick-off will go on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 4:30 p.m. from East Side Eagles Football Club in Winnipeg.

Peewee Thunder

The Peewee Interlake Thunder lost their fourth straight game to open the season.

On Sunday morning, the Thunder lost 51-21 to the St. Vital Mustangs Black at Stonewall Collegiate Field.

Though the loss brings them to 0-4, the Thunder were able to find positives on the offensive side of the ball.

Their 21 points on Sunday beats their combined offensive output from all three of their opening games when the club combined for only 18 points.

Then there is the defensive side where the club struggled to hold down the Mustangs offence. The Mustangs 51 points scored on the Thunder is the most they have given up in a game this season, the previous being 42 in their last game.

The Thunder will have a chance to get back at the Mustangs sooner rather than later as the two clubs are set to meet again on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The final scheduled matchup between the two clubs this regular season will take place in Winnipeg this time at St. Vital Mustangs Football Club.

Kick-off will go at 1:30 p.m.
