Activity centre puts call out for volunteers

Date:

The Morden Activity Centre is a hub of programs, services, and activities for seniors in the community, and there are countless opportunities for people to get involved and help out.

The centre recently put out a call for a volunteer meal helper to serve both at the centre and Oak West Estates each day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., but they are many other ways to get involved.

“I would say for someone who is interested in getting out and socializing, volunteering here is a great way to do it,” said Kaitlin Funk, senior resource co-ordinator at the centre.

“We will look for a spot that fits your interests … we do not want to turn away people who are interested in giving back to the community because we realize the impact that socializing and being active in our community has on our own emotional and mental well-being.”

Several of their programs wind down for the summer, but there are some that go year round and they’re always looking for helping hands.

“All of our meal programs for example rely on volunteers, and much of our programming here at the centre rely on it as well,” she said. “We’re always looking for volunteers to help out in the kitchen and for meal driving as well because those programs do continue year round.

“We have lots of opportunities. Even if someone wants to do filing or even just odd jobs like cleaning … if someone wants to get involved at the centre, we can find a spot for them.”

There is everything from cardio and line dancing sessions to fitness classes to musical jam sessions. Support is often needed as well in organizing group bus trips.

Potential volunteers can stop in any weekday to find out what might be possible. There is also an application form on the website (mordenseniors.ca) or check out the centre on Facebook and Instagram. You can also call 204-822-5663 extension two or email mordensfs@gmail.com.

“If someone comes to the centre looking to volunteer, and the volunteer positions we have available do not match their interests or availability, we can recommend other places in Morden to volunteer that are better suited for them,” Funk noted.
