Central Station handing out free frozen fries May 7

Date:

Central Station Community Centre marks Pay It Forward May next week with its annual Frozen French Fry Giveaway.

From 3-6 p.m. that day, every vehicle that stops by their parking lot at 555 Main St. will receive two bags of fries—one to enjoy and one to give away to someone else.

“It’s all in the spirit of Pay Up Forward May,” explains social impact director Krista Rempel. “We’re hoping to give people an opportunity to pay forward the kindness that they’ve received, and in turn we are paying forward that kindness that we’ve received from Winkler, which has been incredibly generous in supporting us.”

The community centre is doing all this in partnership with the Winkler and District Food Cupboard and The Pantry—both of which provide food to people in need—with support from Second Harvest, Simplot, and Winkler Meats.

Central Station has hosted these Pay It Forward giveaways for a few years now, to great success.

“People really seem to love the fries,” says Rempel, “and we get to see people we’ve never met before, which is really cool … we’re excited to see all these new people and have conversations with them.

“It’s just such a joyous event,” she adds. “It’s probably one of my favourite kind of events throughout the year, because you’re literally just making people happy.”

There is no sign up required to take part. If you’re a member of the community, you’re welcome to come out.

“It’s just our way of saying thank you to the community for all the support that you’ve given us,” Rempel says. “We want to pay forward the generosity that has been given to us in a very small way.”
