Mordenite facing charges after police pursuit

A Mordenite is facing multiple charges following an assault and police pursuit last month.

Morden Police were called to an assault in progress at South Railway and Pembina Dr on April 22 around 6:30 p.m. 

When they arrived, officers observed the suspect to be in the driver’s seat of a black SUV. Police activated their emergency equipment as the driver fled the scene. 

During the resulting pursuit, officers observed the suspect vehicle disobeying several traffic control devices, travelling at speeds above the posted speed limits, and driving into oncoming traffic. 

The vehicle was followed to Spillway Dr., where it continued to attempt to evade police.  When the suspect attempted to travel down a blocked pedestrian path, they collided with two large boulders, damaging their vehicle.

Minor damage to two police cruisers was also sustained as officers used their vehicles to stop the suspect from continuing to flee.

Winkler Police Service members arrived on scene and assisted in securing the driver, who continued to resist arrest. 

Throughout the arrest process, police report, the accused kicked the officers, causing minor injuries.

As a result of this incident, a 32-year-old Morden resident has been charged with the dangerous operation of a conveyance, impaired operations of a conveyance, refusal to comply with a breath demand, two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of assaulting a peace officer, flight from police, and assault.

The accused was released on conditions to attend Morden Provincial Court in July.
