Tesluck storms home at Sandy Hook junior golf tourney

Date:

The “Home of Champions” produced another memorable finish last Wednesday, Aug. 6 as the Sandy Hook Golf Club crowned its latest junior winner.

Thirteen-year-old Jagger Tesluck rallied from a rough front nine to take the overall title with a round of 80. After grinding out a 10-over-par 45 on the outward nine, Tesluck caught fire on the inward side, rolling in three birdies en route to a one-under-par 35. He also claimed closest-to-the-pin honours on No. 7.

In the 15-17 age flight, Tyler Michaluk fired an 81 to top the leaderboard. His steady play included birdies on Nos. 12 and 16, the only competitor to card red numbers on those holes.

The tournament drew 17 juniors aged 10 to 17, with plenty of highlights across the scorecards. Nathan Ortynski was the lone player to save par on the tricky par-3 second. Henrik Vigfusson jarred a birdie on the fifth, while Emmett Flasha stuffed an approach to pick up a rare birdie on No. 13. Tanner Humniski closed in style, rolling in back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to cap his round with a flourish.

Tournament chair Ken Porteous praised Tesluck’s composure under pressure.

“I’m predicting a bright future in golf for this young man,” Porteous said. “He’s only 13 and already breaking par. That’s impressive. We’ll be sending him to next year’s Manitoba Junior Golf Championship.”

The day wrapped up with prizes, a meal, and thanks to Sandy Hook Golf Club and its volunteers.
