Rotary Club supports young curlers, seeks Red Nose volunteers

Date:

The Gimli Rotary Club has kicked off its annual season of youth support with a $1,000 donation to the community’s fledgling U18 curling program, now in its second year.

The funds will help cover the registration fee for young athletes taking part in the Access Credit Union Youth Camp Jan. 17, 2026. It costs $80 per participant and is intended for youths age 9-18.

“There are curling programs for kids and there are curling programs for adults here in Gimli,” said Jay Boaz, a curling instructor for CurlManitoba,. “The U18 program is to fill the gap and to encourage kids to continue playing as they get older.”

Boaz said he applied to Rotary for the grant to ensure that cost isn’t a barrier for youth who want to develop their skills on the ice.

You can register and pay online, and Boaz will then use the grant to at least partially reimburse participants. The clinic will last 5-6 hours and lunch will be provided.

“This donation is just the start of our yearly commitment to youth programs,” said Rotary Club member David Connors.

While the current contribution comes directly from the Rotary Club, one of its major fundraiser — Operation Red Nose — is set to return later this fall. Operated by the Gimli Rotary Club, Red Nose provides safe rides home during the holiday season and raises thousands of dollars each year for youth activities.

Last year alone, proceeds from Red Nose allowed the club to distribute $8,000 in grants to local youth initiatives.

With the busy driving season approaching, the Rotary Club is now putting out an early call for volunteers to join the Operation Red Nose team.

If you or your organization is  interested in lending a hand this year, watch the Rotary Club of Gimli Facebook page for details on how to get involved.
