Selkirk gearing up to host 2026 Bunge Men’s Provincial Curling Championships

2026 Bunge Men’s Provincial Curling Championships Feb. 3-8 at Selkirk

Selkirk is preparing to welcome Manitoba’s top curlers this winter as the city hosts the 2026 Bunge Men’s Provincial Curling Championships from Feb. 3 to 8 at the Selkirk Recreation Complex.

The five-day event, formerly known as the Viterra Championship, will bring 24 men’s teams from across the province to compete for a provincial title and a berth at the Montana’s Brier in St. John’s, N.L. The championship also marks the first year under the event’s new title sponsor, Bunge.

Shayne Merritt, co-host for the event and vice-president of the Selkirk Curling Club, said Selkirk was selected for several strong reasons, including its long history of hosting major curling events, strong volunteer support and its convenient proximity to Winnipeg.

“Selkirk has a rich history of hosting large curling events,” Merritt said. “Our community always steps up with volunteers, and being close to Winnipeg makes it a prime location with teams travelling from all over the province.”

Selkirk last hosted the men’s provincial championship in 2022 at the Selkirk Curling Club due to pandemic restrictions. The 2016 event was the most recent held at the Rec Centre.

Preparations for 2026 are well underway. Online sales for event passes have already launched, and sponsorship packages have been finalized and are being shared with local businesses. Organizers are also pushing for additional volunteers, with about 85 currently registered but close to 200 needed for the event to run smoothly.

“We want to see the Selkirk Rec Centre full and rocking,” Merritt said.

The economic impact on the community is expected to be significant. Teams and spectators have already begun booking rooms at local hotels, and organizers anticipate strong benefits for restaurants and other businesses throughout the week.

“Whenever you get the chance to host an event like this with people travelling from across Manitoba, you see the economic benefits,” Merritt said.

Sponsorship opportunities are available at several levels, with benefits such as event passes, banquet meals, drink tickets and advertising exposure — including visibility on the ice and through online streaming during the championship.

Beyond the competition, Merritt said the event is a chance to highlight Selkirk’s identity, history and local businesses, while showcasing the city’s recreational facilities to visitors and online viewers.

“Whenever we host an event like this, it gives us the chance to showcase the rich history of curling in Selkirk, which started in 1893,” he said. “Any money raised goes directly into supporting our local curling club and keeping it an affordable, healthy living option for people of all ages.”

Fans can expect to see several top Manitoba rinks at the championship, including teams skipped by Jordan McDonald, Braden Calvert and Reid Carruthers.

More information on event passes is available through the Selkirk Curling Club.
