The Manitoba government has introduced a new Business Security Rebate Program aimed at helping small and medium-sized businesses repair property damage and invest in security upgrades, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced this week.
The $10-million fund will offer rebates on a first-come, first-served basis to Manitoba businesses with 75 or fewer employees per location. Eligible applicants can receive up to $2,500 per site for security equipment or repairs made on or after Aug. 23, 2024.
“Our government is stepping up to support business owners with the Manitoba Business Security Rebate,” Wiebe said. “We came together with community stakeholders and our partners in the police to tailor this rebate to address the security needs of Manitoba businesses, workers and communities.”
Qualifying security upgrades include cameras, alarm systems, motion detectors, window protection, anti-graffiti coatings, fencing and lighting. Eligible repair costs range from broken windows and doors to insurance deductibles tied to vandalism or arson, graffiti removal, replacement of signage or cash systems and temporary boarding or fencing required to secure damaged premises.
John Graham, director of government relations for the Retail Council of Canada, called the initiative a national first, adding it reflects Manitoba’s leadership in supporting safer retail and restaurant environments.
“Store-based investments that create safer, more secure environments are one of the most effective ways to deter crime,” Graham said. “This nationally unprecedented commitment is yet another strong example of the Manitoba government’s leadership across Canada.”
The province previously launched the Manitoba Security Rebate Program in June 2024, providing up to $300 for homeowners and renters to purchase security equipment. A new $2-million homeowner and renter intake opened in October for purchases made on or after Aug. 23.
