Fishermen open 2026 with strong road win

Date:

The Selkirk Fishermen couldn’t have asked for a better start to 2026.

Already sitting among the top three teams in the Capital Region Junior Hockey League heading into the Christmas break, Selkirk has carried its momentum into the new year with back-to-back wins.

One of those victories came last week on the road, where the Fishermen earned a 5–1 win over the Lundar Falcons in Lundar.

Sage Courchene and Ashton Schroeder each scored in the opening period to give Selkirk a 2–0 lead after 20 minutes. Lundar pulled within one in the second, setting up a tense third period.

Courchene restored the two-goal cushion early in the final frame with his second of the night, before Schroeder followed with his own second to make it 4–1. Logan Saluk added a late goal to cap the scoring and seal the Fishermen victory.

Selkirk goaltenders Johnny Enns-Demchuk and Marcus Sharpe combined for 31 saves in the win, while Lundar’s Dylan Leclair turned aside 32 shots despite the loss.

The victory kept Selkirk firmly in the league’s top three, moving the Fishermen to within one point of St. Malo and five points back of Beausejour. Selkirk now holds a 13–5–0–0–1 record through 19 games, with 11 remaining before the postseason.

The Fishermen are set for a two-game week, hosting the North Winnipeg Satellites on Friday before welcoming the Arborg Ice Dawgs on Sunday.

Friday, Jan. 16 — North Winnipeg at Selkirk, 7:30 p.m., Selkirk Recreation Complex
