This past week, Carman’s India Young signed a letter of intent to accept a golf scholarship to continue her golf career and education at the University of Northern Colorado. Young will head south to the U.S. to attend a NCAA Division 1 level program out of Greeley, Colorado.
Young, a Grade 12 at Carman Collegiate, only began golfing during the pandemic and quickly grasped onto the sport.
“I think my competitive nature made me want to start playing tournaments,” said Young. “It’s pretty amazing that I was able to have success so quickly. But I worked very hard for it.”
Young played in several high-level golf tournaments across the province and country this past summer. After a strong showing at the junior provincial championship, the season was highlighted by qualifying for Nationals in New Brunswick.
“I had a great season playing solid in multiple tournaments,” said Young. “After a hard week at provincials, I was able to come back fighting on the last day, which led to my qualification to the Nationals, which was a great experience as I got to play against the best junior girls in the country.”
After graduating from Carman Collegiate this coming June, Young will continue her education at the University of Northern Colorado next fall, where she plans on taking business and exploring psychology.
“There were quite a few schools that showed interest, but I wanted to stay more in the Midwest and somewhere with a solid business program. I picked Northern Colorado because it felt like a mix of home and opportunity. They just brought in a brand-new coach this year who is focused on making the program even better than it already is.”
Young is excited at the prospect of everything that living in Colorado brings, which includes potentially picking up the art of skiing.
“I feel like I need to practice skiing this winter, so I’m ready to go next year in Colorado, so that will be a winter challenge. It will be a great mix of home and the mountains.”
