Royal Hoops Report: Varsity clubs jostling for position at midway point

Date:

The Lord Selkirk Royals varsity boys and girls basketball teams remained in the top half of their respective league standings for another week.

The boys earned a dominant home win Wednesday, defeating the Springfield Sabres 78-59 to improve to 4-3 on the season, while the girls suffered a double-digit loss to the MBCI Hawks the same night.

The victory marked a third straight win for the varsity boys. Springfield, still searching for its first win of the season, dropped to 0-5 and sits 12th in KPAC. The Royals moved into fifth place with the win, improving their point differential to minus-11.

Selkirk now trails only Maples (9-0), Miles Macdonell (6-0), West Kildonan (5-2) and River East (5-2-1) in the standings. The Royals are scheduled to face Garden City on Monday, followed by a home matchup with West Kildonan on Wednesday.

On the girls’ side, the Royals fell just for the second time this season, losing 60-39 to MBCI in Selkirk. The Hawks moved ahead of Selkirk into second place in KPAC Tier 2 with the win. Both teams sit at 4-2, but Selkirk’s lower points differential places them third overall.

Plenty of season remains for both squads, with the varsity girls set to host Murdoch MacKay on Monday.

Upcoming games

• Varsity boys (4-3): Monday, Feb. 2, 6 p.m. at Garden City; Wednesday, Feb. 4, 6 p.m. vs. West Kildonan

• Varsity girls (4-2): Monday, Feb. 2, 6 p.m. vs. Murdoch MacKay
