Steelers make long-awaited return home, but slide continues

Date:

The Selkirk Steelers’ record took another hit last week with three more losses in Manitoba Junior Hockey League action.

On Tuesday, they fell 3-2 on the road to the Virden Oil Capitals despite a 32-31 edge in shots.

Selkirk’s Kayden Turner and Evan Mayer scored as the game sat tied 2-2 at the midway point.

After Virden took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission, Selkirk looked for a tying goal but was unable to get anything past Virden’s Braxton Burdeny.

He finished with 30 saves in the winning crease while Selkirk’s Ethan Sawyer totalled 28 in the Steelers net.

The Steelers then played again Friday in what marked their first game back at Selkirk Recreation Complex since Jan. 23.

Their opponent that night had also been the Portage Terriers, and on Friday the teams faced off again, with Portage winning 4-2.

They outshot Selkirk 40-34 en route to victory and never trailed.

Selkirk’s Dawson Madden scored a second-period goal to tie the game at the time, with Carter Zalischuk netting the club’s other in the third.

The Terriers led by a goal heading into the final minute before an empty-netter iced the game.

Sawyer finished the night with 36 saves while Portage’s Logan Cunningham totalled 32 in the victory.

Selkirk then played the following evening against the Steinbach Pistons in Selkirk, which resulted in a 5-0 victory for the road club.

The Steelers were outshot 41-22 in the loss, with Sawyer staying busy with 36 saves.

Steinbach’s Easton Thvedt was perfect at 22-for-22 in the opposing net as his club scored three in the third to end Selkirk’s comeback hopes.

With the trio of losses last week, Selkirk is now on a seven-game losing streak and has dropped to 18-24-2-1, good for fifth in the MGEU East Division.

They now look ahead to a new week with games against Niverville, Portage and Neepawa upcoming.

Upcoming games:

Monday, Feb. 16 at Niverville Nighthawks, 3 p.m., Niverville CRRC

Friday, Feb. 20 at Portage Terriers, 7:30 p.m., Stride Place
