Philippine Independence Day celebration Saturday

Date:

The regional Filipino community is gathering in Morden this weekend to celebrate Philippine Independence Day.

It’s been 128 years since the Asian nation declared its independence from Spanish colonial rule on June 12, 1898.

The anniversary of that date has become a “day of celebrating our Filipino heritage and showcasing our culture,” shared event organizer Jewel White. “We celebrate it to remind everyone of the importance of independence, and what it means when you don’t have it.”

The Morden festivities take place in Suncatch Plaza on Saturday, June 13 from noon to 9 p.m.

Food vendors will be opening up shop at 12 p.m. and traditional Filipino games will begin around 4 p.m. followed by a ceremony featuring guest speakers at 5 p.m.

Taking the stage throughout the evening will be a host of local bands, including The Seven Pines, Second Street Band, Victoria Junction, Jeepney Harmony, D’Juans, CFC Band, 10-4, and Ritmo. Also performing are solo singers Woody Palunday, Shekina Pennacerrada, Manny Araullo, and Miel David.

“It will be a continuous program of music and dance,” White said, noting there will also be a fashion show of traditional Filipino garb with cash prizes up for grabs for the best outfits. To register to compete, email info@mordenpinoy.ca.

This will be the third time this community celebration has been held, growing a little each year. White encourages everyone to come join in on the fun.

“I’m really hoping people will come out and have a taste of the Philippines.”
