Rams provincial run comes to halt in quarterfinals

Date:

The Stonewall Rams’ hopes of a Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association provincial baseball title came to an end last Friday in Selkirk when they ran into the eventual provincial finalists in the playoff round.

Stonewall posted a 1-1 record in round-robin play, competing in a pair of high-scoring games against its Pool 4 opponents.

The Rams opened the tournament with a 22-21 victory over the River East Kodiaks on Thursday night in what became the highest-scoring game of the tournament.

Stonewall later fell 15-12 to the Goose Lake Raiders on Friday morning to conclude its round-robin schedule.

By finishing second in Pool 4, the Rams earned a quarterfinal matchup with the Vincent Massey (Brandon) Vikings on Friday afternoon.

Massey ended Stonewall’s provincial run with a 6-1 victory.

The Vikings later advanced to the championship game, where they fell 8-6 to the Northlands Parkway Nighthawks, who captured this year’s provincial title.

Stonewall’s Jake Fortin received provincial recognition following the tournament, earning a spot on the Provincial All-Star Team after a strong debut at the championship.

The Grade 9 Ram batted 12-for-15 during the tournament, helping lead a Stonewall offence that scored 35 runs over three games.
