Volunteers, sponsorship for Viterra Championship still needed

Date:

Everyone is thinking about the upcoming holidays but…the 2024 Viterra Men’s Provincial Curling Championship is right around the corner.

Wow, it’s going to be a great stretch of curling.

The host committee is organizing the event, which will be held at the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex from Feb. 6-11, on behalf of Stonewall.

Full-event passes are on sale now at early-bird prices until Dec. 31. The regular price is $150 but the early-bird price is just $125.

That’s a really good price for a ton of quality entertainment – and it would be a pretty cool Christmas gift.

“We’re trying to get the word out and all of the information and the link to buy is on the website,” said Stu Brown, a co-chair for the event along with Fran Frederickson.

The link is viterra2024stonewall.com

As for volunteers, the goal is to have about 200 individuals step forward.

“We’re getting close to about 150 so we’re pretty pretty confident and hopefully can get people signed up as quickly as possible,” Brown said. “We would like to hit the mark as soon as possible so we can figure out what each volunteer is doing on their shift and all that type of stuff.”

It is the first time that Stonewall has hosted the men’s provincial bonspiel. The whole province is going to have their attention on Stonewall for this premiere event. Brown said the centre sheet will be live streamed so people can watch from home.

As for local business support, that is also very greatly needed.

In the past, Stonewall businesses have done a phenomenal job supporting tournaments and major events in various sports.

More help makes this event even greater.

“Businesses have basically stepped up but the more that get involved the better,” Brown said. “It’s been a great response from businesses but we want more and more.”

Meanwhile, as of this week, locals that have now qualified include the Emerson Klimpke team out of the Stonewall Curling Club (with Reese Hamm, Logan Edie and Ryan Zapotochny), Thomas Dunlop of Stonewall (with the Devon Wiebe team from Winnipeg), Rodney Legault of Stony Mountain (with the Sean Grassie team from Winnipeg), the Justin Reynolds’ team out of Winnipeg Beach, and Steen Sigurdson of Gimli with his team out of Winnipeg.

That’s an impressive field of curlers.
