Stonewall home recently destroyed in blaze

Date:

A fire destroyed a home just outside of Stonewall two weeks ago despite the efforts of two fire departments.

On Saturday, April 20 at about 11 a.m., Stonewall-Rockwood Fire Department received the call about a house fire on Dan Griffith Drive.

Fire Chief Darrell Humeniuk said the house was fully involved by the time they arrived on scene.

“With the winds that were blowing, it was up and into the attic and roof before we even got on scene,” he said. “Unfortunately, there wasn’t too much chance of stopping that one.”

Stony Mountain Fire Department provided mutual aid for water tenders and extra help from fire firefighters.

“There was only one person home at the time and they got out,” Humeniuk said.

“Unfortunately, it was such a big burn that it’s hard to determine exactly what the cause was, but they’re still working on that. As far as I understand, the homeowners have insurance.”

A GoFundMe page called “Help the ones we love the most” has been set up to help support the family. Learn more at www.gofundme.com/f/help-the-ones-we-love-the-most.

In other fire department news:

Stonewall Rockwood Fire Chief Darrell Humeniuk reminds everyone to be extra careful with fires and burning this spring.

“I’d like to remind people that it’s a lot drier out there than they think. Things will burn even though they don’t think it will,” he said.

“It is extremely dry right now still, especially in the rural areas. Be extra careful with anything you’re burning.”
