Community support for Woodlands boy awaiting lung transplant

Date:

Despite rain pouring down on their plans of a community walk and barbecue fundraiser, it didn’t dampen the spirits of the Woodlands community who rallied together for a very special cause.

Families gathered in the school gymnasium to stand by Grade 3 student Sam Madden.

Sam, awaiting lung transplant surgery in Toronto, found himself surrounded by love and support as over $22,000 was raised in just four weeks. The generosity of neighbors and friends and sponsors shone through during this challenging time for Sam’s family.

Sam’s parents Lisa Parks and Garth Madden, new to the Woodlands community, have been touched by the outpouring of support. The warmth and sense of belonging have truly touched their hearts. They express deep gratitude to everyone who has shown care for Sam during this challenging time.

Parks highlighted the exceptional kindness and assistance they’ve received from the school staff and children. Each morning, Sam is welcomed with smiles by his dedicated EA’s – Mrs. Petrowski, Mrs. Sorenson, or Mrs. Magus – providing him with not just physical support but emotional comfort as well.

Parks also acknowledged the exceptional individuals she has had the privilege to work closely with at the school – Mrs. Hoas, Ms. Peltz, Mrs. Martilla, and notably Mrs. Ross – all embodying remarkable kindness in their interactions with Sam.

The atmosphere in the gymnasium was filled with anticipation as Mrs. Ross had her head shaved in solidarity with Sam. Grade 7 student Shay won a draw to cut her ponytail and Ross’s husband Jeremy and Sam shaved the rest of her head.

Her transformation symbolized not only a gesture of support but also a powerful message of hope and resilience.

The genuine compassion and support shown by this community are a testament to the power of unity in times of need.

Sam’s family said it was definitely a night they won’t forget.
