Event to raise money for Selkirk and District Lions Club
The Selkirk and District Lions Club is inviting the community to support its philanthropic efforts by attending an upcoming fundraiser.
The event Elvis: The Legend Lives takes place Saturday, July 13, at 4:30 p.m., with doors opening at 3:30 p.m., at Selkirk Christ Church (227 McLean Avenue). Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Last year, the event sold out, so those interested are encouraged to get their tickets soon by calling 204-482-6293 or 204-485-6899.
The fundraiser will feature Elvis impersonator Daylin James, who has been named a Canadian and international Elvis tribute grand champion. The show provides two hours of entertainment, and food and beverages will be available for purchase.
Money raised at the Elvis event will go toward supporting the club’s upcoming community projects, such as providing Christmas dinners in the community and at the residential building the club operates, baking the Lions Club’s signature Christmas cakes and hosting their market.
Nandeen Satheesh, president of the Selkirk and District Lions Club, has been a part of this chapter for the last four years. He said supporting the community has always been important to him, so being a part of the Lions Club seemed like a good fit.
“It’s always been my passion, to help people,” Satheesh said.
Satheesh and his wife, Veena Nandan, owned the Selkirk restaurant Vinnies South Indian, and during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant offered more than 5,000 free meals to those who needed it. The owners had put a call out to say if people were unable to purchase groceries, they could contact the restaurant, which would provide them with food.
After seeing the owners supporting the community in such a big way, the Selkirk and District Lions Club invited the two to join the group.
Satheesh is now in his second year serving as president, and it will be his last one, as it is a two-year term.
“We request all the people in Selkirk support us in our projects,” Satheesh said. “If you need something, the community is free to ask for help. We’ll be there to help the community.”
