The Arborg-Bifrost Parks & Recreation Commission (ABPRC) is dusting off the rocks for youth curling this season and is establishing an exclusive league for junior curlers.
An under 15 (U15) and an under 18 (U18) league will be established to help boys and girls interested in developing curling skills and honing those skills.
“Junior curling doesn’t have a league or a place in the Interlake for youth to improve their skills, and this league will hopefully be able to fill this void “ said ABPRC recreation director Tom Chwaliboga. “Every year it’s a challenge to get enough people to curl. Providing a league for junior curlers will hopefully generate interest and sustain the game into the future.”
Curling is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages with many clubs offering programs like Little Rocks, Junior and Adult leagues, he said.
The Interlake Junior Curling League will be open to boys, girls and mixed teams. It will start Nov. 20 and run until the end of February. The schedule will be a round robin format before breaking for Christmas, then there will be a couple of training/skills sessions. The season will finish with another round robin playoff.
“With every new program, it will take a while to grow,” said Chwaliboga. “I am hoping to get four teams this year and slowly expand the program.”
In addition to the new league, ABPRC offers a Little Rocks Program (grades 3-5) and a Learn to Curl Junior Program (grades 6-10) along with a Stick League.
