One of the most anticipated projects in Altona is nearly complete.
After beginning construction last fall, the new Tim Hortons on Centre Ave. is set to open April 3.
Franchisee Rupesh Patel says he is excited to see people’s reaction when they see the new restaurant. With over 2,700 sq. feet, it will provide indoor seating for 40, as well as a huge outdoor patio for customers to enjoy their coffee outside when the weather is warm.
Patel says they’re looking at a staff of about 30-35.
“We have hired a few already and they’re getting training right now at our Morris location. We’re looking to hire more local team members, for full and part-time positions. We want to make sure most of those staff are in place before the business opens.”
He operates one location in Winnipeg, as well as rural locations in Swan River, Thompson, and Morris, and says he loves to work in smaller communities.
“I grew up in a small town, as well. There are friendly people, and I love the warmth and the small-town vibes. And Altona is a good size that can support a franchise like this.”
Initially, Patel was planning to open the restaurant at the end of January, but the contractor they hired had a conflict with timing due to vandalism at another construction site.
“That cost us a major delay. But we’re making very good progress now.”
The weather was a huge advantage, he adds, allowing them to complete the paving of the parking lot, concrete floor, and sidewalks earlier this winter.
Patel adds they are looking forward to getting involved in the community through their Tim Bits soccer and hockey programs, and fundraisers like the Smile Cookie Campaign which supports local non-profit organizations.
“That will be running in May. Last year, over three days, we raised $25,000 at our Morris location for a basketball and pickleball court. This year we’re partnering with Altona and Area Family Resource Centre. Our goal will be to match what we raised in Morris. Altona has more than double the population, so if they can do it, I’m sure Altona can.”
With the Smile Cookie campaign, the entire $1.50 cost per cookie goes to charity.
“We sold over 18,000 cookies in Morris, so you can imagine how many will be sold here,” Patel says.
