Flag football coming to Morris

Date:

Morris is gearing up for a new sport this spring with the introduction of flag football to the town’s recreational roster.

“We’re pretty excited about this,” said Megan Dilts, program coordinator with the Morris Area Recreation Commission. “We were looking at what other communities are offering members and thought this would be a great addition. In a poll that went out on Facebook last week, we had 40 families express interest for all age categories.”

Plans are to organize several junior level teams — U10, U12, and U14 — for a six-week season beginning in May with the support of the Winnipeg Football Club’s new Rural Flag Football League. Volunteer parent coaches will receive a day of training through a coaching clinic at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.

Dave Funk, a Morris native and long-time football enthusiast, has been coaching flag for six years in Winnipeg.

“There are very few opportunities to play flag football in Manitoba and having this sport in Morris means more opportunity for everyone, especially parents,” he said, adding that you “get what you put into it. I grew as the game grew, and I fell in love with it.”

The co-ed teams made up of 7-15 players of all skill levels will compete in the Pembina Valley League.  Practices will be held in Morris on Tuesdays and Thursdays with games in Winkler once a week.

Flag football is an easy-to-learn sport that focuses on fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The Winnipeg Flag Football League that supports flag football in the province helps young athletes build confidence, develop skills, foster community connections in a fun and engaging atmosphere.

Youth born between 2013 and 2018 are invited to register online at bluebombers.com/morrisflagfootball.

Cost is $97 per athlete, which includes a Blue Bombers ticket to a 2025 pre-season home game and two jerseys that will be worn during games.

Dilts emphasizes that the program cannot run without parent volunteers and encourages community members to step up to ensure a season of success.

“No experience required,” she assures.
