The rain didn’t dampen the spirits of those who took in the third annual World Rivers Day as a buccaneer, tar, wench, scallywag or seadog.
Boyne River Keepers (BRK) and the Carman and Community Chamber of Commerce presented the family fun-filled pirate-themed day and derby last Saturday.
World Rivers Day volunteers brought awareness to the fun everyone can have on the water and the importance of protecting it so generations will continue to enjoy it.
Fifty poker hands were purchased for $10 each, with $600 raised for the fully accessible river launch at Ryall Park.
Kelly Seward, one of several volunteers and organizers, said BRK has raised $56,000 through donations, events and grants to date. Construction of the dock will hopefully start this fall.
Heather Russell of Winnipeg had so much fun at last year’s event that she returned and was the lucky winner with her poker hand of four 8’s to win the kayak. Amanda Rheault placed second and won a disc golf set. Cora Peterson won the grand prize in the costume contest.
After participants completed the circuit on the water, everyone met up at Ryall Park, where Gord Laschuk provided music for the afternoon, and guests could visit the Treasure Chest Market community organization booths or grab lunch at Ol’ Smokey’s food cart. Chamber executive director Jodi Winkler organized a treasure hunt for the kids through the business district.
