Carman Handi-Van receives grant for meal program

Date:

Carman Handi-Van recently applied for and received a $1,500 grant from Corteva Agriscience. This money will be used to deliver meals from the Carman Congregate Meal Program.

The Parkview Congregate Meal Program offers home-cooked meals to seniors and persons with disabilities in Carman from Monday to Friday through the noon hour.

Initially, it was offered as a dine-in-only meal, but during the pandemic, it became clear that a way to deliver this meal to those who needed it was necessary.

“It quickly became a much-needed service, as our demand for meals increased by 200%,” said Carman Handi-Van, Administrator Kathie Findlay. “We are presently delivering an average of 30 meals per day.”

Erin Lemky works at Corteva Agriscience and is the Town of Carman representative on the Carman Handi-Van board.

Corteva Agriscience employees could apply for a $1,500 grant on behalf of organizations in their communities.

“Lemky encouraged us to send her the information on how the handi-van operates and how the funds might be used,” said Findlay. “She then applied for the grant for the Carman Handi-Van to cover the cost of meal delivery for the Parkview Congregate Meal Program.”

The funding was soon granted, and Carman Handi-Van board members are pleased that this funding will now cover approximately two months of meal delivery service for the congregate meal program clients.
