In the battle for first place in the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Zone 4 – Tier 2 Varsity boys soccer league, the Dufferin Christian School (DCS) Stingers defeated the Carman Cougars 4-0 on Sept. 28 to finish their regular season with a perfect 5-0.
Six teams compete in the Zone 4 – Tier 2 soccer league, including DCS, Carman, MCI Blues, Roseau Valley Raiders, Shevchenko Blues, and Morris/St. Jean/Nellie McClung (Co-Op).
“The season has been really good,” said DCS Stingers coach Kevin Voorhorst. “With most of our players back from last year, we expected to have a good season, and the kids have not disappointed.”
DCS and Carman had a hard-fought game in which DCS won 4-0 in the battle for the top spot in the league.
“It was a good game as Carman played well, and they made us work for the win,” said Voorhorst. “Our team played very well, and they executed with a solid team effort. During our first practice, I said to a couple of the players, ‘That was ‘textbook’ defence.’ I was quietly reminded that we come to soccer to have fun and to enjoy ourselves, and we should not ruin soccer by talking about those things (textbooks) while we are here. It has become a bit of a joke with the team, so I have to say it. That was a ‘textbook’ performance.”
With the win, DCS finished in first place this season and secured home-field advantage for the playoffs.
Both DCS and Carman have a semifinal game on Oct. 2, with the winner playing in the finals on Oct. 5. The first-place DCS Stingers in Carman against fourth-place Shevchenko, while Carman Collegiate plays Roseau Valley in Carman as well.
“We like playing in Carman as the town does a good job maintaining the fields here,” said Voorhorst. “If you watch the way these kids have played this year, it is safe to say they expect to win again this season.”
