Elm Creek’s Logan Deurbrouck has recently won Portage Collegiate Institute’s (PCI) Trojan’s Rookie Offensive Lineman of the Year, PCI Trojan’s Dedication Award, and was a nominee for the Triple-A Bob Whitman Memorial Rookie of the Year Award.
The PCI Grade 9 student has played football for seven years and enjoyed every minute.
“My dad is the one who got me into it because he claimed I needed to play a sport, so football is the one we decided on,” said Logan Deurbrouck. “Both my parents have been with me doing football this whole time and are both supporting me in different ways.”
Even though he lives in Elm Creek, the 6’3’, 270 lbs Deurbrouck decided to switch for his high school years to PCI partially because of the school’s football program.
“Football is definitely one of the reasons that I switched to PCI, and I believe I made a great choice because, through football, I have met so many more people and have learned so much more through the seniors and other upper-level students.”
As one of the youngest players on the PCI team, Deurbrouck has been holding his own against the older players and excelling as one of the best centres and tackles in high school football.
“This season went overall well for our team, but there were a few tough losses along the way. However, we overcame and improved throughout the year. Although we all tried hard, we did end up losing in the playoffs and that game hit hard for everyone, especially the seniors. After this season, I’m not sure there’s another team that I would not want to be on at this high school level.”
After the season recently wrapped up, Deurbrouck was pleased to win his team’s Rookie of the Year Award and be nominated for the league’s Rookie of the League Award.
“It means a lot to be nominated and win Rookie of the Year at the team banquet, and I’m thankful for the great coaching that I received from coaches and even players and for the league awards; I am very thankful for the coaches putting my name forward to be considered for this award.”
Deurbrouck’s goals for this sport are the same as many others in his spot, but his main priority is to play at the college level after he finishes high school in a couple of years.
“I’d like to play college at the Division 1 or 2 level in the NCAA in the United States and eventually try and play professional football, but something I wish to accomplish in the short term is I would like to win league championship sometime in my high school career.”
