Miami School’s Luke Swain was recently named the Dairy Farmers of Manitoba High School Athlete of the Week for Dec. 4 for his volleyball exploits.
Swain and his Miami Marlins recently took home the bronze medal at the 2024 Manitoba High School Provincial Volleyball “A” Championships in Glenboro. Swain was named the “A” Boys Players Choice Award recipient and was named to the Provincials All-Star team for his efforts.
“Luke is an outstanding player who controls the game no matter the situation,” said Miami School athletic director Steve Doell. “He is always willing to do whatever is needed from the team. Luke is one of the most versatile and dominant Varsity High School Volleyball Players in the province, and he averages 82% across his classes.”
Swain was very proud of his team for having a good tournament at Provincials and representing his school well.
“The season and provincials went really well as we had a full team of Grade 11 students and still did great,” said Luke Swain. “So we’ll have a full team coming back next year and expect to do even better. Hopefully, we can win a title next year.”
The Grade 11 student was happy to win a couple of awards over the provincials’ weekend, including the High School Athlete of the Week accolade.
“It felt pretty good to win those awards as one of the awards was determined by player vote, and the All-Star team was by the organizers of the tournament,” said Swain. “I also wasn’t expecting to win the High School Athlete of the Week award, but it’s pretty cool, and I’m proud to have won it.”
With volleyball now in the rearview mirror for the rest of the school year, Swain’s focus will shift to playing on Miami School’s brand-new basketball team.
“Miami hasn’t had a basketball team at the high school level for decades, so the expectations are a little low. But some good times and laughs will be had along the way.”
