Miller earns high school athlete of the week award

Date:

Elm Creek School’s Reid Miller recently earned the Dairy Farmers of Manitoba Athlete of the Week award for the week of Nov. 6.

Miller is a Grade 12 student at Elm Creek School who plays volleyball as an outside hitter and serves as the team captain for the Elm Creek Cobras.

The Cobras’ season has been going great so far, with two tournament championships (the Gladstone tournament with a record of 6-0 and the Portage tournament with a record of 5-1) and winning the Zone 4 “A” Championship this last week after going 5-1 in the regular season.

“Being named a High School Athlete of the Week is an honour as I never would have expected myself to be named Athlete of the Week,” said Miller. “Without the support of my family, friends and coaches, this dream could have never become a reality.”

Miller credits the strong volleyball program at Elm Creek School to his growth in the game and his team’s success.

“Our school’s volleyball program is fantastic. With the opportunity to attend the volleyball academy that Elm Creek offers, it has really helped everyone who plays improve their skills. Our Phys-ed teacher/varsity boys coach, Rick Scott, has had a major impact on the volleyball program at our school. With his decades of experience coaching national championship teams and college teams, he is helping everyone he coaches with all of his knowledge of the sport. My favourite thing that Coach Scott says every practice is, ‘You can’t expect to be good at volleyball after one practice; you need to get 1-2% better every time you touch the court; that’s how you improve.’”

Miller’s team recently won the Zone 4 “A” Varsity Boys championship. It was a hard-fought game, but Elm Creek battled together and defeated the Miami Marlins in three straight sets.

“As a team, we are all excited that we won, but our next goal is the Provincial Championship. So we are going to keep training hard and improving each day as we prepare for Provincials with strong hopes to bring a Varsity Boys “A” provincial championship back to Elm Creek,” said Miller.

The grade 12 Miller plans to pursue volleyball at the college level after he graduates from Elm Creek School in June 2025.

“I have strong hopes to continue my volleyball journey after high school, yet I am undecided about where I want to attend college,” said Miller. “Volleyball plays a big part in this decision, as I have grown to love this sport, and it would be a dream come true to continue playing volleyball after high school.”
