Sonatrice hosts annual Christmas Cheer fundraising concert Dec. 7

Date:

A long-standing holiday tradition will return next month as Sonatrice prepares to host its annual Christmas Cheer Concert in support of the Carman & District Christmas Cheer Board. The concert will take place Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. and will once again bring together local choirs, musicians and student performers for an afternoon of festive music and community spirit.

Sonatrice, which includes 20 members divided into first sopranos, second sopranos and altos, is directed by Brenda Doell with Audrey Myers accompanying. This year’s program features a wide range of special guests, including the Carman Collegiate Grade 7/8 Band, Senior Band, Senior Choir, the Active Living Choir, soloist Jaclynn Knight, instrumental group Nostalgia and Anamotoe, with Sonatrice closing the performance.

Deb Penner, one of the organizers, said they are especially thrilled to welcome students from Carman Collegiate to the stage.

“We are just thrilled to have the kids from the high school involved,” the group shared. “The community groups are always so supportive of this event.” Audience members will also have an opportunity to join in the music, with two or three traditional carols planned as sing-alongs. Joy to the World will serve as the closing communal piece.

Admission is by monetary donation, with all proceeds directed to the Carman & District Christmas Cheer Board. The funds help support local families during the holiday season. “We only take in monetary donations so the Christmas Cheer Board can spend the money where it’s needed,” organizers said. Last year’s concert raised $6,029.73, a total the choir says reflects the community’s generosity. While no formal fundraising goal is set, Sonatrice hopes to once again forward meaningful support to the Cheer Board. The concert does not include toy, food or mitten-tree collections.

Sonatrice has hosted the Christmas Cheer Concert for an estimated 35 to 40 years as part of its more than 50-year history in the community. Organizers say the long-running tradition speaks to Carman’s strong spirit of giving. Looking ahead, the group is also preparing for its 2026 spring concert.

The Dec. 7 Christmas Cheer Concert is open to all, and organizers hope to see the community once again fill the seats for an afternoon that blends music, tradition and support for neighbours in need.
