Over $50,000 raised to date
The Arborg-Bifrost Parks and Recreation Commission (ABPRC) paid tribute to local volunteers who’ve shown exemplary service and dedication to their community during its third annual gala event a few weeks ago in Arborg.
Bailey Sigvaldason, who is part of the gala’s organizing committee and sits on the board of the recreation commission, said that over the past few years, the gala has raised over $50,000. The money is put into the Phil Bauernhuber Accessibility Fund, which then goes towards upgrades to make local facilities accessible to people of all abilities.
“The ABPRC Board is thrilled at the success of this year’s event. With the generous contributions of attendees and community-minded businesses, we were able to raise funds for the Phil Bauernhuber Accessibility Fund,” said Sigvaldason. “Although final numbers are still being calculated, the gala has raised over $50,000 in the previous two years. All proceeds raised go towards improving accessibility of our recreation facilities for all community members to enjoy.”
This year’s gala attracted 230 people and was emceed by Joel Fridfinnson. It included special guest speaker Keenan Roche.
“Keenan Roche, a young man from Arborg who was paralyzed in a motor vehicle accident, spoke about his own experiences as a disabled young person and the importance of accessibility for all,” said Sigvaldason.
The event honoured six volunteers, who were chosen by municipal and community organizations.
The Town of Arborg recognized Allan Sigurdson. The Municipality of Bifrost-Riverton recognized the late Marvin Magnusson. The Riverton Friendship Centre recognized the late Donald Bilinski. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #161 recognized Les Gislason. The Arborg Ice Dawgs recognized Ivan Gulay. And the Arborg-Bifrost Parks and Recreation Commission recognized 10-year-old Conley Bardarson, who received a youth award.
