Aspiring business moguls transform ideas into sales

The recent Kid’s Biz Camp in Carman was a hit. From Aug. 19 to 23, twelve enthusiastic youths explored the ins and outs of entrepreneurship through hands-on activities.

The camp, led by Community Futures Heartland (CFH) general manager Ken Reimer, offered new insights into business skills and entrepreneurial concepts.

On Monday and Tuesday, he led the campers into the world of what an entrepreneur is, making impressions, trends and business ideas.   

On Wednesday and Thursday, Alana Bolton, Manager of Business Development at CFH, took the kids through the financials and marketing and explained the importance of doing these things right to succeed. 

On Friday, excitement peaked when the entrepreneurs prepared for their big sales event at the Farmers Market. Penny Schoonbaert, CFH’s Community Economic Development Coordinator, was with the young entrepreneurs, helping them finish up and prepare their products for the big sale.  

“This is the day that all their lessons come together to help them succeed at their new business,” said Schoonbaert. “Marketing is very important, but not near as valuable as presentation, not only of product but of the seller. The Biz Kids needed to be ready with a smile to talk about their products and entice buyers to buy their product.”

But it wasn’t all work and no play! The campers enjoyed exciting outings, like bowling and a round of mini-golf at Syl’s followed by ice-cream, along with visits from community professionals who provided insights into personal finance and business operations. 

The biz kids got to speak to PKF Lawyers and visit Carman Granite. Financial advisor Kimberley Jensen talked to them about Personal Finance and brought them pizza for lunch. On Thursday, they went to visit Tyler King at Boyne River Bistro and made their own pizza for lunch. After lunch, they went swimming in the afternoon. 

“The support we received from the businesses and the community as a whole is very much appreciated,” said Schoonbaert. “We strive to make this week-long camp one of learning but also one of fun, and the fun couldn’t happen without this support.”

Customers filled the booths on the last day at the Friday market, and sales went great all evening. The kid’s had a variety of products available, including several different styles of bracelets, necklaces, cards, paintings, slime, stickers/labels, magnets, and much more. Almost every vendor sold out before the market was over. 

“It was an incredible group as they were so eager to learn and soaked up all the information they could. The campers were so pleased at the end of the market and wore the biggest smiles ever. The staff that worked with this delightful dozen was also full of smiles, seeing how amazing the community support was. To everyone who played a part during our week of camp, thank you. Parents, we thank you for entrusting your children to our care. See you next year.”
