I Love to Read Month fostering connections

Date:

February is an exciting time at Roland School as they embrace “I Love To Read Month.” This year’s theme, inspired by the Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg, focuses on “Building Bridges: developing connections with our diverse community.”

“Reading is always important as reading is everywhere and is lifelong,” said Roland School principal Melissa Benner. “There is so much going on this month at our school to help celebrate reading. We go as far to even having students making books in the snow to read during recess time, and we have stop, drop and read, as well as teacher switches scheduled too.”

Roland School has a full month of events planned on the docket, including community volunteer readers such as the RM of Roland’s Reeve Jodi Gaultier, Roland Fire Department (who will also tie in some Fire Safety lessons into their visit), Carman Cougars hockey players, Access Credit Union, Midland MLA Lauren Stone and a local radio station.

The school will also have some special Mystery Guest readers who will be joining students and staff through Google Meets, not to mention the whole school reading train and cross-grade reading buddies.

“All of these opportunities help create a connection with those around us, and we look forward to some fantastic new books about other cultures to help us connect through diversity,” said Benner.

Additionally, students can look forward to participating in “Readopoly,” linking home and school reading efforts creatively as they track their progress on an impressive bulletin board display.

Finally, Roland School will wrap up the month with a skating carnival and reading celebration at the Roland Arena.
