Woodlands Wildlife Club celebrates hunters

Date:

Each year, the Woodlands & District Wildlife Association brings together nature enthusiasts and hunters to celebrate a shared passion for wildlife and outdoor adventures.

The Woodlands Community Hall transformed into a gathering spot for club members, family, and friends for the club’s annual awards banquet on March 1. The hall was decorated with a display of wildlife antlers and head mounts, each with a memorable hunting tale.

Burnside BBQ catered a delicious meal, which was complimented by homemade desserts by club members Hailey Hueging and Bentley Wickens and coffee donated by Lillies and Lattes. The Meat Station Butcher Shop in Eriksdale donated meat for the late lunch.

Following dinner, hunters were recognized for their achievements in various categories; Nicole Fairlie took home the award for the largest adult typical elk (132”). Armand Buors harvested the largest typical whitetail in the youth division (84 2/8). Women’s largest whitetail – Hailey Hueging (129 6/8”), second-largest – Natasha Arnfinson (128 2/8”). Most symmetrical whitetail over 100” – Colton King (162 1/8”), second-largest – Trevor Procter (127 7/8”). Largest typical whitetail – muzzleloader – Kyle Buors (136 7/8). Largest non-typical Whitetail – Braden Fisher (162”). Largest typical whitetail between 100”- 115 7/8” – Gary Sutherland (109 7/8”). Largest typical whitetail between 116”- 130 7/8” – Mike Tataryn (128 6/8”). Largest typical whitetail – Ray Blowers (157 1/8”), second-largest typical whitetail – Cameron Upgang (142 2/8”).

Throughout the evening, there were door prizes, a variety auction, a 50/50 draw, and a gun raffle. There was also a draw for a female club member over 18 to represent the club at the annual Becoming an Outdoors Woman 2025 hosted by the Manitoba Wildlife Association. Hailey Heuging won the draw for the event, which gives women the opportunity to take part in workshops such as filleting, archery, field dressing, rifle, muzzleloader, and much more.

The club also announced exciting news for fishing enthusiasts. The Woodlands & District Wildlife Association is bringing back the coveted fishing award. Between April 1, 2025 and Feb. 15, 2026 keep track of combined inches of your best perch, pike and walleye caught in Manitoba. Fish must be measured with a tape measure or bump board and a photo must be submitted to compete.

Joining the club has its perks. Membership opens doors to events like these and gives you a chance at recognition during the awards banquet in 2026. Family memberships are $50, individuals pay $40, and youth can join for just $15. Along with access to exclusive events, members receive benefits like subscriptions to Outdoor Canada West magazine and discounts at Mark’s Work Warehouse, a voice in shaping the management of Manitoba’s natural resources and insurance coverage — ensuring peace of mind during outdoor adventures.

The Woodlands & District Wildlife Association is dedicated to supporting local youth and believes in investing in the future of our community and its environment. This commitment shines through its generous $500 bursary aimed at aiding Warren Collegiate graduates. This opportunity encourages students to pursue further education while fostering a love for nature.

Upcoming events for the club include the annual Ernie Welburn Memorial Family Fishing Day, which will be held at Shoal Lake from 11:00 to 2:00 on March 8. The first 20 youth registered will receive a prize, and the club will provide hotdogs and drinks. This year, the club is also planning a crow shoot and hopes to bring back the Youth Goose Shoot in the fall.
