Fishermen’s Saluk, Schroeder named CRJHL All-Stars

Date:

The Capital Region Junior Hockey League announced its league All-Stars last week, and the Selkirk Fishermen had two players who made the list.

Their top scorer, Logan Saluk, was one. In his second season with the Fishermen, he’s scored 19 goals and 17 assists through 25 games.

“He’s our goal scorer, the guy who puts the puck in the net,” said head coach Chris Poponick on Monday. “He’s got lots of speed, a really good shot, and if we put him in the right situation he can score. He’s a pure scorer and loves doing what he does so a great guy to have on the team.”

The other was defenceman Ryland Schroeder, who leads Fishermen’s defence in points with six goals and nine assists in 25 games in his second full season with the team.

Poponick compares him to Winnipeg Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey in his ability to excel in all areas on the ice.

“He’s our go, go gadget guy. We can put him in any situation. He’s our number one powerplay guy, runs it from the top, is a very reliable penalty killer, and adds some offensive touch. He’s always in there and puts up points and plays between 25 to 35 minutes a game.”

And Schroeder showed that on Sunday when he picked up an assist in the Fishermen’s 3-2 loss to the Lundar Falcons at Selkirk Recreation Complex.

Brennan Feschuk and Dawson Bergagnini scored to tie the game at two in the first period, but a late third-period goal from Falcons’ Daniel Masters sealed the Falcons’ victory.

The Fishermen’s record dropped to 9-12-0-1-3 with the loss, but they moved into fifth place in the CRJHL following the La Broquerie Habs’ win over the Arborg Ice Dawgs on Saturday.

They now sit two points behind the Habs for home-ice advantage in round one, with each team still having five games remaining.

The Fishermen and Habs will clash in a key game this Wednesday at the Hylife Centre with playoff implications.

“We’re still trying to figure that team out, it’s one of the teams we haven’t beaten in regulation this year so hopefully we can clean some more information on Wednesday,” said Poponick. “They have some really great goaltending. We’ve put up lots of shots against them and haven’t seen the results for that and it’s been the story of our season. Lots of games we’re putting up plenty of shots but just not seeing the end result getting a goal out of it. We’re hoping Wednesday we’ll see a bit more of what they’ve got, and we’ve got a few little wrinkles we’re going to throw back at them, and hopefully, it sets the stage for our first-round playoff match against them.”

The Fishermen head to St. Malo on Friday before hosting North Winnipeg on Monday.

Upcoming Games:

Wednesday, Feb. 5 at La Broquerie Habs, 8 p.m. at HyLife Centre

Friday, Feb. 7 at St. Malo Warriors, 8 p.m. at St. Malo Arena

Monday, Feb. 10 vs North Winnipeg Satelites, 8:15 p.m. at Selkirk Recreation Complex
