The Lockport School Lancers have been outstanding in track and field and basketball.
Lockport had 104 top 10 finishes this season and their Grade 9s dominated the top tens (64) and the podium (46 of 64 visits).
“However, the 7s and 8s learned what it takes to get to the podium and they started to get there by the end of the season,” said Lancers’ teacherMarco Morelli.
As for stand-out results for the team:
Our most decorated athlete (13 top three finishes) and winner of Gr9 high jump (twice), triple jump (twice), and hurdles plus second in the long jump was Emma Weiss.
Our relay teams swept the 4 x 200 meter Gr. 9 boys and girls relays, finishing first in both categories.
Gr. 9 boys: Reid Sardo, Elliot Romans, Sam Wiebe and Dixon Hartwich. These boys did not lose a relay as they took the 4 x 100m relay title as well in the last meet.
Gr. 9 girls champs in 4 x 200m: Taylor Henderson, Rielle Forfar, Emma Weiss, and Cassidy Laing. They were third in the 4 x 100m relay.
Our Gr. 9 teams finished first and second in an exciting 4 x 100m mixed relay with Lockport B winning by a fraction of a second. The team includes Sam Wiebe, Reid Sardo, Emma Weiss and Cassidy Laing.
Our Gr. 8 boys 4 x 100m relay team also took first. They were Evan Brown, Parker Bragg, Anderson Kiernicki, and Noah Hawkins.
Other notable first place finishes this season:
Aurora Marynowski in Girls high jump, Anna Wiebe first place in Gr. 7 girls long jump, Elliot Romans in Gr. 9 boy’s 60m, Taylor Henderson first place in Gr. 9 girls shot put.
We did especially well in shot put playing in the top 5 quite a few times.
We were blessed to have a great collection of volunteer coaches on the team. They were community adult coaches Sigmar Wiebe and Tyler Stoesz. Our high school volunteer coaches were Neveah Marynowski, Sydney Ostermann, Elliot Ferreira, and Kadence Sharples.
“All in all it was an excellent indoor track season. The results in relay was unprecedented as I don’t recall dominating the Gr. 9 relays in my years of coaching at Lockport School. We hope to continue to grow and excel in the outdoor track season,” said Morelli.
The basketball teams had a very successful season as well. The Grade 7 girls were LSJHAA champs for 2024, coached by Annette Harman and Bobby Zamyrkut.
They were the underdogs. But played their best game of the season in the final, defeating the Ecole Selkirk Suns 25-13.
The Grade 9 girls were also underdogs, and put it all together in their final at the LSJHAA championships, defeating East Selkirk 30-22. They were coached by Kalie Brunette and Aylssa Nixon.
