St. Andrews’ Whitford wins MTJ PLYR Series at Selkirk Golf & Country Club

Date:

One of St. Andrews’s own demonstrated her golfing skills this week at the 2024 Maple Junior Tour PLYR Series stop in Selkirk.

Skylar Whitford won the MJT Girls 15-19 division as the youngest golfer at only 15 years old.

Whitford shot a 103 and 100 (combined score of 203) over two rounds on Monday and Tuesday at Selkirk Golf & Country Club to best competition.

“I prepared by going out to golf with friends and family who challenged me,” said Whitford to MJT’s media team following her victory Tuesday.

“I also mentally prepared by giving myself motivation and talking positive. It brings me confidence in my game, knowing I can play in new environments and under pressure.”

Selkirk is the first MJT PLYR Series event Whitford has competed in this season.

The PLYR Series features four events in three provinces throughout the season, Selkirk being the lone Manitoba-based event.

With over 60 golfers competing in PLYR Series events throughout the season, it showcases talent from budding golf stars across the region.

Other victories this weekend came from Oakville’s Ty Montour in Peewee Boys, Ile Des Chenes’ Ryder St. Laurent in Bantam Boys, Winnipeg’s Hudson Hunnie in Juvenile Boys, Dauphin’s Jackson Delaurier in Junior Boys, and Winnipeg’s Camryn Thomas in Girls U15.

Delaurier and Hunnie’s performances earned them spots on MJT Team Canada, which will compete at the JNJG International in Australia.

Non-PLYR Series MJT events will continue to run all summer across Canada. One more event will be played in Manitoba, the MJT Bieber Class/Manitoba Junior Championship at Carman Golf Club from Aug. 6-8.

Manitoba has hosted three other MJT events this season at Kildonan Park Golf Course, St. Boniface Golf Club, and Transcona Golf Club.
