A group of 18 avid naturists participated in a maple and mushroom workshop on April 16.
Attendees from St. Andrews, St. Clements and Selkirk gathered at the East Selkirk Hall with certified arborist Ken Fosty.
Fosty shared how to make maple syrup from local maple and birch trees. He featured a live demonstration on how to tap a log and boil, bottle and store the sap.
Fosty also educated others on growing shiitake mushrooms on oak logs. He shared how to inoculate the logs and care for the mushrooms in your yard.
Fosty has been a certified arborist for 35 years. He instructs several courses and workshops across rural Manitoba, where he educates participants about tree and chainsaw safety, insects, and diseases.
The spring months are a prime time for maple and mushroom workshops, and Fosty typically hosts several such events around this time of year.
“Sap is flowing as we speak,” he said.
St. Clements Recreation Programs hosted Fosty and workshop attendees for a one-and-a-half-hour-long presentation.
The workshop was very insightful to all the participants.
“Ken Fosty is an exceptional teacher and the group was very engaged,” said recreation programmer Taylor McConnell.
Maple syrup taps and mushroom growing kits were available to purchase following the presentation.
