Health Canada issued a warning and recall on Jan. 18 about shell eggs that could be contaminated with salmonella, which are bacteria that cause food poisoning, and is asking consumers to not eat them.
The affected eggs brands are as follows: Compliments, Foremost, Golden Valley Eggs, IGA, no name, and Western Family. They have best before dates of Feb. 16, Feb. 22 and March 1.
The eggs were distributed in Manitoba, Ontario, British Columbia and possibly other provinces and territories.
“Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections,” states the recall. “Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.”
Health Canada advises consumers to contact a health-care provider if they think they’ve become sick from any of the recalled products.
