Silver and Gary Peltier, the heart and soul behind Woodlands’ beloved Ride for a Child’s Wish, have received a remarkable honour as this year’s Make-A-Wish Manitoba Provincial Volunteers of the Year.
The Peltiers have made a profound impact through their dedication to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their journey began in 1988 with just 11 horseback riders and $750 raised. Today, their annual Ride for a Child’s Wish has raised nearly $1.8 million to help grant wishes for children facing critical illnesses.
What started as a modest fundraiser has grown into a vibrant annual event and a symbol of hope for many families. For more than three decades, the Peltiers’ tireless commitment has helped make dreams come true.
Despite the success, the couple remains humble. “We share the credit with our Wish Ride committee and volunteers,” said Silver. “There is no way we could do this without all of them. The long-time volunteers as well as the folks that can give us a few hours here and there have made all the difference in us being able to put on this fantastic fundraiser for Make-A-Wish.”
In 2017, the Peltiers received Canada 150 Medallions for their outstanding community service. On June 4, they will be honoured once again at a special Make-A-Wish banquet in Winnipeg.
The 35th annual Ride for a Child’s Wish is set for Aug. 23. The family-friendly event features a 10-mile trail ride, a 250-kilometre motorcycle ride, children’s activities, wagon rides, a BBQ supper, a wish auction and live music.
