Summer is here, and for the residents of Teulon and its neighboring communities, that can only mean one thing: it’s farmers market season.
Since the 1980s, the Teulon Farmers Market continues to be a cherished summer tradition for the community, offering a vibrant blend of local produce and handmade goods. Each week brings something new and exciting, with vendors showcasing their talents and products that reflect the heart of Teulon.
Shifting the market to Main Street on July 12 was an innovative approach that allowed residents not just to shop but also to connect with local businesses. As we look forward to more markets this season, it’s clear that these events aren’t merely about shopping; they foster connection among neighbors while supporting local artisans and farmers.
Originally, the market was run and organized by the Teulon Agricultural Society. For a while after that, it was run by Darcy Loehmer and Lana Knor. In 2020, Teulon Seniors’ Resource took over operations as a way to raise funds for the organization. Dianna Shymko, Noreen Stone, and Judith Dedrick-Williams are the three individuals on the board who run things, and others members help out.
The regular Friday markets are hosted on the lot located directly south of Teulon’s Co-op on Highway 7. Plenty of vendors attend with a variety of homemade products: fresh vegetables and fruit, baked goods, honey, handmade jewellery, clothing, meats, and more.
The change in location and time on July 12 debuted this year’s series of markets.
“We wanted to have a market which could include town businesses and service organizations,” said Dedrick-Williams. “Having the market on Main Street gave people a free family event, with the opportunity to visit both vendors and the businesses that were participating, too.”
Among the local businesses that participated in the event were Mike’s Pizza, Chicken Chef, Farmhouse Cafe, Kozy’s, Finders Keepers, and TBS. All of them ran special deals for the evening.
Overall, there were 22 vendors that set up shop on Main Street. This amount of vendors offered a large variety for visitors and customers. There was clothing, woodworking, honey, makeup, Epicure, jams and jellies, fresh vegetables, personalised engraving, home baking, jewellery, and even a mobile barber shop!
The market also presented an opportunity for local groups to do some fundraising. Members of the Green Acres Art Centre were running a barbeque and selling tickets to a raffle. Raffle tickets were also being sold by Teulon Seniors’ Resource and the Teulon Food Bank.
We thank all our volunteers, vendors, and customers who persevered through the rain, wind, and humidity,” said Dedrick-Williams. “It was hot, but it was a good night!”
From now until early September, the market will be back to its usual location, south of Teulon Co-op and hours are Fridays 3 to 7 p.m.
However, for the final event of the season, The Teulon Senior’s Resource will host another night market on Friday, Sept. 6 on Main Street to cap off the season in style.
