Mercs drop home game to Winterhawks in SEMHL action

Date:

The Warren Mercs were unable to slow Springfield’s offence Friday night, falling 9-3 to the Winterhawks in South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League action.

Springfield built an early lead with a pair of first-period goals and extended its advantage in the second, scoring four times to pull away. Adam Hughesman led the Winterhawks’ attack with four goals on the night.

Warren got on the board midway through the second period when Patrick D’Amico finished a play set up by Gianluca Esteves and Johnny Lazo. D’Amico added his second of the game early in the third, while Jesse Korytko rounded out the Mercs’ scoring late in regulation.

Despite the lopsided score, Warren goaltender Evan Baty faced a heavy workload, making 64 saves in the loss. Springfield netminder Steve Christie stopped 22 shots to earn the win. Neither team found the scoresheet on special teams, with Springfield going 0-for-1 on the power play and Warren not receiving a man advantage.

The Mercs will look to regroup as SEMHL play continues later this week.
