Rams finding footing with latest set of wins

Date:

The Stonewall Rams appear to be settling into form.

After opening their Winnipeg High School Hockey League Winnipeg Free Press Division season below the .500 mark, the Rams boys’ squad strung together back-to-back wins last week to improve to 3-3-0-1-0.

Stonewall’s week began with a setback — a 9-1 loss to Springfield on Tuesday — but the Rams quickly rebounded. They downed Gabrielle-Roy 4-2 at home Wednesday before mounting a dramatic 6-4 comeback victory over St. John’s-Ravenscourt on Friday.

The Rams wasted no time asserting themselves Wednesday, scoring the first four goals of the game to secure the win. Ethan Zagrodnik, Jakek Grantham, Presten Grandmont and Daniel Halleux supplied the offence, while goaltender Tyler Loehmer turned aside 28 shots for his second win of the season.

On Friday at Dutton Arena, Stonewall found itself trailing 4-0 midway through the contest before storming back with five unanswered goals in the third period. Nate McIvor sparked the rally with a late second-period marker, then added another early in the third to cut the deficit in half.

From there, the offence came in waves. Banx Chartrand, Alec Harrisko, Mason Bernier and Brody Slatcher each scored as Stonewall surged ahead and held on for the win.

The Rams will look to stay level when they travel to face the Sanford Sabres on Thursday. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. at Sanford Recreation Centre.
