Rockwood Wrecking and Recovery needs your help to fill giant Christmas ball

Date:

If you’ve driven through Stony Mountain lately, you may have noticed a larger-than-life decoration on Main Street. Rockwood Wrecking and Recovery has placed a five-foot-tall Christmas ball on its property — and the company hopes to fill it with toys and clothing for the Stonewall and District Cheer Board.

The metal structure was built by D & M Welding. Rockwood Wrecking and Recovery owners Dawn and Steve Green then added paint, lights and decorations to transform it into what they hope will be a beacon of community generosity.

“Last year, we began collecting gifts for the Cheer Board and put the presents under their tree,” Dawn Green said. “This year, I thought, how cool would it be if we made a giant Christmas ball and filled it with presents? So, D & M Welding said they could make it, and once it was built I painted it, added some lights and some decorations — I am so happy with how it turned out.”

Green’s goal is to collect enough toys to completely fill the ball. If donations exceed that, she hopes to fill the back of one of their tow trucks as well.

The plan is to wrap the ball in plastic to secure the toys, then fasten and hang it on the back of a tow truck for delivery. While the details are still being finalized, Green said she’s excited to see how it all comes together.

“Whatever we get, we will find a way to bring it to them,” she said.

Supporting the Cheer Board is important to the Greens, who see the project as a way to give back.

“Not everyone has the ability to give back, but we can, and we like to do it in different ways,” she said. “We grew up in a community where we weren’t always surrounded by community support, so now it’s important to us to ensure everyone in our community can have these opportunities. Not only throughout the holiday season but the entire year. We like to help out when and where we can.”

Rockwood Wrecking and Recovery is accepting unwrapped toy donations until Dec. 15 at 12 Main St. in Stony Mountain from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Donations outside business hours can be left in the bin on the front step or arranged in advance by calling 204-392-4892.

The first 25 people to donate a toy will receive a free Rockwood Wrecking and Recovery toque as a token of appreciation. Donors are also invited to take a photo in front of the Christmas ball and share it on the company’s social media pages, where staff plan to create a collage of all contributions.

Delivery is set for Dec. 16 — one more way the Greens hope to spread holiday cheer.

“Thank you for your support this holiday season,” Green added. “Your support means everything, and we’re already planning something fun for next year’s donation.”
