Welcome aboard to the Town of Stonewall’s new economic and tourism development officer. 

Brittany Isfeld will start in the position on March 1. The town’s strategic plan called for the creation of this economic development position. 

“She has a lot of good connections already established so I think she’s going to be able to hit the ground running,” said Stonewall Mayor Sandra Smith. “I’m really excited about the developments that we’re going to have in 2025.”

In other council news:

• The Town of Stonewall has declared Thursday, Feb. 20 as Kin Canada Day and the week of Feb. 16 to 22 as Kin Canada Week. Kin Canada is an all-Canadian service organization devoted to serving communities across the country since 1920. This year, the organization is celebrating its 105th anniversary. Council encourages Stonewall residents to celebrate the local Kin clubs and their members. 

• Council accepted a $17,635 quote to supply flowers to the Town of Stonewall in 2025 from Jasperson’s Greenhouse. 

• Council accepted a proposal from DavDar Industries Ltd. for lighting fixture replacement and a proposal from Kroll Painting & Renovations for the maintenance and renovation work for the Town of Stonewall office. 

• Seasonal employment opportunities are available with the Town of Stonewall, including groundskeepers, summer camp leaders, catalogue compilers, works and operations summer projects staff, lifeguards and swim instructors. The deadline to apply is Feb. 28. Learn more on the Town of Stonewall website at www.stonewall.ca.

• A Louis Riel Day event will take place at the Heritage Arts Centre on Monday, Feb. 17. The cost is $7 for adults, $5 for students and free to kids aged two and under. Learn more on the Town of Stonewall website or by calling the Heritage Arts Centre at 204-467-7980.

• Council gave second reading to a bylaw to allow the town to establish one or more positions of a designated officer.

• The Town of Stonewall gave second and third readings to a bylaw to establish new water rates, wastewater rates and to regulate fees and licensing for septic haulers. The rate per cubic metre, effective Jan. 1, 2025, is be $1.04 for water and $0.91 for wastewater. It’s a slight increase from the previous rate of $1.01 per cubic metre for water and  $0.88 for wastewater.

• Members of the South Interlake Rockwood Agriculture Society requested that council consider making a financial contribution towards a building project.
