It’s another StoryWalk summer — with more routes and stories for everyone to enjoy.
The Stonewall and Teulon libraries are presenting local communities with StoryWalk, which is a movement and literacy-boosting project that uses a children’s picture book with its pages separated, laminated and displayed along a walking route in the community.
Created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., the StoryWalk Project is developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk is a registered service mark owned by Ferguson.
“This is the third season of StoryWalk that the Stonewall library has installed. We are so happy to have installed four StoryWalk routes in our catchment area. We love that this project encourages people to get outdoors and be active while interacting with reading and literacy,” said Stonewall librarian Joan Ransom.
“It is such a fun way to combine these two activities. All our routes have been selected for safety and accessibility, and the books were selected for their colourful illustrations and fun stories.”
In Stonewall, the route runs west down Centre Avenue starting at 5th Street West. The story boards are zip-tied to the trees along the Collège Stonewall Collegiate tree line.
In Stony Mountain, the route boards are zip-tied on the inside of the fence at the park on Memorial Boulevard and Prince Street.
In Grosse Isle, the story boards are zip-tied to the trees along the path near Grosse Isle School.
And in Balmoral, the newest route, the story is displayed along McKnight Road.
“We will feature five stories on a rotation throughout the four routes. Stories will be changed on July 16, July 30, Aug. 13 and Aug. 27,” Ransom said.
“We hope families will read all the stories over the whole summer. At the end of each story, there is a small booklet that we hope readers will leave us their feedback in. Jot us a note telling us if you liked the story and how you enjoyed your StoryWalk experience.”
In addition, he Stonewall Terry Fox Committee contacted Joan Ransom about having the story Terry Fox and Me by Mary Beth Leatherdale featured during the Terry Fox Run.
“The library is so happy to feature this title on the Stonewall route beginning Sept. 10,” Ransom said.
Adding to the excitement, the Teulon library is participating in the TD Summer Reading Club StoryWalk project. The story starts at the library and goes east along Beach Road. The featured book is The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield, which will be up for the summer.
“We hope all enjoy this project,” Ransom said.
