Track and field athletes from Warren Collegiate Institute left their mark at the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Provincials last week.
Warren sent 31 athletes to the three-day event at the University of Manitoba Stadium to compete against the top athletes from across the province.
The varsity girls’ 4×100 metre team highlighted the event by winning gold with a time of 52.10 seconds.
The Wildcats also had solid performances from Colby Darragh placing fourth in the varsity girls pentathlon, Rianna Cassils placing fifth in varsity girls long jump, triple jump, and 100m, Ethan Corbett placing fifth in varsity boys 3000m, Rylan Thibodeau with a personal best in the boys para-intellectual 800m, and the varsity girls placing fourth in the 4x400m and fifth in the distance medley.
“It was so great to see our athletes’ hard work come together at this event,” said track and field coach Fallon Campbell. “The facility offers an experience in itself, with a rubber track and a huge grandstand of fans cheering on all athletes.”
Provincials were the final track and field event, and Warren now reflects on an impressive season.
Throughout the season, the team participated in many competitions and was a standout in individual and team events.
They also took home the MHSAA Zone V AA-AAA Track & Field Championship 2023-24 banner two weeks earlier in Arborg.
“Accomplishment comes in many forms, whether it is crushing a personal best, running through the wind and rain, beating a school record, hearing your teammates cheer you on, or getting to the podium,” said Campbell. “This is what we instill in our athletes, and we believe it keeps them coming back year after year.”
This season was special for graduating athletes who finished their track and field careers last week.
For some, they made provincial debuts; for others, they topped personal bests.
Campbell and the rest of Warren’s coaches told the athletes to soak it all in and be proud of their accomplishments ahead of provincials.
Throughout the season, it was evident that this was a tight-knit group, as athletes could be seen waiting at finish lines to high-five teammates for finishing up yet another event and representing the Wildcats well.
For athletes returning to the team next year, it will be an opportunity to run it back as Warren will look to have another successful track and field season in 2025.
