Grassmere Church marks 150 years with weekend celebration

Date:

The Grassmere Church is inviting families, neighbours and friends to celebrate 150 years of community connection and faith this summer.

A two-day anniversary celebration is set for July 5 and 6 at the historic church site, offering a mix of old-time fun, good food and shared memories.

Once a central gathering place in the small community, the church was known for its summer picnics—complete with cold plate suppers prepared by the ladies of the UCW and Ladies Aid, and a full slate of games for all ages. Sack races, wheelbarrow races, tug-of-war, and baseball capped off an evening of laughter and friendly competition.

That spirit will be rekindled on Saturday, July 5, with a day of activities that honour those traditions. A catered cold plate supper will be served, and guests can expect many of the same classic games, including races and tug-of-war using the original rope from past picnics. A small canteen and children’s fish pond will also return.

Those wishing to attend the supper must RSVP and pay by May 31. Adults meals are $15, children aged 6 to 12 are $5, and children under five eat for free. To book a spot, contact Patti Matheson at mathesonbp@gmail.com.

On Sunday, July 6, a worship service will be held at 10 a.m. with guest minister Reverend Eric Matheson. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Although the Grassmere Church closed several years ago, two services are still held annually, helping maintain ties within the wider community.

Organizers say they’re thrilled to welcome guests from near and far to honour the 150th milestone.

“We’re excited to be celebrating such a wonderful part of our history,” said George Matheson.
