Teulon Saints junior varsity girls win Zone V banner

The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Zone V junior girls volleyball championship was held Oct. 28 at Warren Collegiate and Oct. 29 at Teulon Collegiate.

The Teulon Saints earned their spot in the playoffs with a strong round-robin performance. They defeated the Fisher Branch Cougars 25-4 and 25-13, the Fisher River Hawks 25-9 and 25-15, and the Lundar Kodiaks 25-9 and 25-17. Their only loss came against the Arborg Athletics, falling 25-12, 20-25, 15-4.

In the semifinal, the Saints topped the Gimli Lakers 26-24 and 25-14 to advance to the gold-medal match against the Warren Wildcats.

The championship final was a hard-fought battle. Teulon dropped the opening set 22-25 but rallied to win the next two 25-23 and 15-5 to capture the Zone V title.

The Saints will now turn their focus to the upcoming junior varsity A/AA provincial round 1 playoff in Grandview on Nov. 8, where they’ll face the host Spartans, the Baldur/Cartwright Cougars and the West St. Paul King’s Knights.
